Silverlight 2 Releases Tomorrow

SLLogo

I'm very pleased to confirm that we'll be releasing Silverlight 2 tomorrow.

eWeek has an article that mentions the release and our funding for an open-source project to create an Eclipse plug-in for Silverlight.  My personal opinion is I can't imagine using Eclipse for Silverlight development on the PC given the availability of Visual Studio…. but on the Mac, if/when such a thing is available… that would be very different. (Of course, this is a personal preference)

ZDNet covers the story and mentions that Silverlight penetration is approaching 50% in some countries, and that during the Olympics, NBCOlympics.com, powered by Silverlight had 50 million unique visitors, 1.3 billion page views.  Here's what ZDNet has to say about the Eclipse announcement

Microsoft is going to be working with Soyatec to bring Silverlight development capabilities to Eclipse, which in theory means that we could finally have Mac and possibly even Linux development tools for Silverlight. According to the press release this will also be free. A technology preview of the tool is available now

Computer World's coverage includes these morsels

Microsoft is also releasing for free a set of programming templates called the Silverlight Control Pack under its Microsoft Permissive License, as well as the technical specification for Silverlight's Extensible Application Markup Language (XAML) vocabulary via Microsoft's Open Specification Promise…[and] letting users of the free Visual Web Developer 2008 Express Edition write Silverlight applications

Hiya Jesse,

I took some notes while listening (and asking questions) to the teleconference. A small transcript can be found on my site (www.nathanbrouwer.nl/default.aspx).

Cheers, keep up the good work.

Hi Jesse -

I have existing Silverlight 2 Beta 2 applications that are being used within my company's site, and to minimize downtime, I will be releasing the RTW version as soon as it comes out. Can you let us know when exactly the release will take place (what time)?

So what is Microsoft doing with the tools?  It would have been nice to let developers update the programs or at least be able to do a rebuild with RTM before it is out.

Now the scenario is that you can have clients install the plug-in before the developers can get the tools.

I"m still trying to finger out if there there are improvements to the text rendering engine.

I'm salivating over confirmation.

This release is a bit early. Developers (including myself) are still finding and reporting significant bugs in RC0. Our hope was that you'd wait until at least PDC (the logical place for such a launch) to give yourselves more time to fix these bugs.... Now we'll have to find workarounds. I dislike workarounds... a lot.

Well, from the conference it was mentioned the tools will be updated. I do agree the time schedule is tight though. Advice from MS was to download the new toolset, do a rebuild (which should be no problem since there are no breaking changes) and do a publish.

I do agree though that updating from beta 2 to rc0 is a pain and is quite a lot of work. Given this, maybe they should have given us a bit more time (though, we also complain when they take too long).

Upgrading from RC0 to RTM is trivial, there are no breaking changes SO theoretically your RC0 version should work for RTM.

I know all mine did..

It's interesting that you mentioned Eclipse, yesterday I was playing with Aptana (an IDE based on Eclipse that tagetss Javascript and Ruby), Rails, Ruby, Iron Ruby and Silverline (an extension to Rails).

The dev experience is good, the tools support isn't there yet, but it's a really interesting concept. Basically it allows Rails to reuse, Ruby code that runs in the Server and IronRuby code that can be run in the client using the DLR and Silverlight, using existing concepts of Rails like RJSs.

# bartczernicki said on 14 October, 2008 01:25 AM

If you have a Beta 2 release that you need to keep working for whatever reason...just simply make sure you turn off the updates on the Silverlight client you are using tomorrow.  This will keep the application working until you need to, as it won't update the plugin automatically.
