WinXP IE7 Silverlight 1.0 Crash

I have a serious problem with all versions of Silverlight. I just tested 1.0 Release version. After installation I can run one Silverlight application in my IE7 browser. When the application unloads my whole system hangs. The mouse pointer is still moving but not even Alt-Ctrl-Del works.

If I pull the plug and uninstall Silverlight my system runs normal again.

Re: WinXP IE7 Silverlight 1.0 Crash

oskbo,

Does this behavior manifest itself only with this one application or any Silverlight 1.0 application?  If this application is publicly available, could you provide the URL?  When your system hangs, is the CPU use high or low?

Let's see if we can't get to the bottom of this.

Re: Re: WinXP IE7 Silverlight 1.0 Crash

Jonathan,

This happens to all Silverlight applications. Then fan always speeds up when it hangs so i asume that the CPU is high. My computer really freezes when this happens, but it does not crash.

As a first step, can you help me to make sure that I really have uninstalled all that relates to Silverlight? So I can do a clean install of 1.0 and try again.

 Thanks, Oskar

Re: Re: Re: WinXP IE7 Silverlight 1.0 Crash

You an uninstall you silverlight first, the way is control pannel->install or remove software->silverlight . Then you can go to http://silverlight.net to reinstall the silverlight again, and then validate that if the sample silverlight applications works?

If the sample works well, I think it is not the problem of silverlight itself. It is maybe the problem of the application you viewed.

Or other reason, for example, Is there some antivirus software you installed?

I knew from this forum, some the antivirus software affect the silverlight usage.

Could you tell me the IE7 security settings?  If you provide the details of reproducing it, it is very appreciated! I need the link you accessed.

Re: Re: Re: Re: WinXP IE7 Silverlight 1.0 Crash

I have uninstalled from the control pannel. But since I have had problems I have installed/uninstalled many times. My question was how I can make sure that my system is clean from all previous installations before installing 1.0 again?

Im running Kaspersky Anti-Virus for windows workstation, but I deactivated "Real-Time Protection" .

My security setting are: Medium-High for the Internet zone.

Latest application I tried was http://www.flowers-for-you.com.my/ and it works as long as I keep it in the browser. But If I close the tab my comuter freeze.

I think if the dir and regkeys don't exist, siverlight is uninstalled.  Please tell us if IE crash again after you reinstall silverlight.

dir: %Programfiles%\Microsoft Silverlight

I have now uninstalled Silverlight since the crash.

Dir does not exist.

RegKeys does not exist.

I have uninstalled all browser plugins like "developers toolbar", Sun Java, Acrobat reader, Flash.

I'll be back with a report after the install.

Re: Re: Re: WinXP IE7 Silverlight 1.0 Crash

oskbo, I attempted to reproduce the case you metioned. My OS is XP Pro SP2 with the latest patch and IE7. And I installed the Kapasky personal version.

I found when I installed the kapasky, the computer became very slow. The computer is like to lost respond. But when I deactive the protection function of Kapasky, the computer restored to the normal status, any operation with normal speed.

And I installed the latest silverlight 1.0, and access the website you metioned, it works very well, no any problem.

But when I actived the protection function of Kapasky, the computer became very slow again.

Just like locked.

So in my opnion, your problem maybe due to the Kapasky, if you uninstall kapasky, silverlight would works well.

I'm having the same issue but I'm not running Kapasky.  I've uninstalled and reinstalled Silverlight for months across several versions and it freezes my computer every time.  I can go to the page once and subsequent visits result in my system locking up for about 10 minutes with IE pegging out the CPU.  The page that did it this morning is the Microsoft home page with the Halo video.  When I uninstall Silverlight my system works fine.

I'm running WinXP Pro with SP2 and Symantec.  Sometimes I'll get error messages when Silverlight crashes IE and sometimes I won't.  Does Silverlight create a log somewhere when it errors out?

Re: WinXP IE7 Silverlight 1.0 Crash

I'm glad to find this thread. Both my firefox 2 and IE6 are having the same problem. I just upgraded to IE7 but the same. Once I went to Popfly.ms, actually once got to any silverlight app, the CPU usage went to 99% and the fan started screaming. Mouse can move but nothing else. I've tried waiting for hours but no use. The only way was to hold the power key to shut machine down. Actually the very early version of silverlight worked. I remember the latest Windows Live Writer gave the exact same problem. The MS guys gave a trick, which was to disable the Windows Live Writer Upgrade Service and it worked. I'm wondering if there is a similar thing to turn off.

Since both Firefox and IE acted the exact same way, I'm sure, very sure, it's silverlight's problem.

Glad to see more people reporting this.  I still have the issue as well.  I see a lot of potential with silverlight but unfortunately I can't work with it.  My home computer doesn't have the issue.  I'll ask again:  Is there an error log or a dump somewhere to help get to the bottom of this?

Hi all,

This post seems to be getting a lot of views but no answers from the microsoft team.  Come on help us out.

I just installed siliverlight and after trying to navigate away from microsoft.com my computer froze and I could do nothing but move the mouse cursor.  I waited 15 minutes and nothing happened.  I couldn't even access task manager.  My system clock didn't even update itself.

I am running windows xp sp2 with all updates installed.  I am running Symantec virus scanner and no software firewalls.  I don't have anything out of the ordinary running on my machine.  Can someone from MSFT check this out or at least acknowledge us.  Let us know if there is something that we can do to help narrow down the problem.

Here is a list of running processes:

I will switch from Kaspersky to Microsoft ForeFront Client Security during december and will be back with a report.

I have not have time to spend on testing this lately, but since I uninstalled/reinstalled all browser related third party plugins. I still have Silverlight installed and it does not freeze my computer every time I run in to sliverlight enabled web site, but it still happens from time to time.

Jonathan, are you still researching this?  It's been 3 months since your post and there have been no suggestions from you or any Microsoft employees.  Does Microsoft want Siliverlight to fail or what?  Come on this is ridiculous.

I apologize for the inconvenience, Chad.  I've been helping out another team so I've been away from Silverlight for the last few months.  I'll check this out.  In the meantime, I can send you some instructions on creating a crash dump.  That will help us analyze the problem, at least on your machine.

That would be helpful.  I have sliverlight uninstalled at the moment but I would be willing to install it again if providing a dump file will help out this problem.

Jonathan,

Thanks for your attention on this.

I reinstalled silverlight, went to Microsoft's home page, and as soon as I navigated away it froze briefly.  When I tried to navigate back to it, the computer completely froze and I had to kill the process.  IE had the cpu pegged at 99 and the "Loading" animated gif for the IE tab only spun every 20 to 30 seconds.  I have the dump ready to upload, just let me know what to do with it.

 Thanks

Jonathan,

The crash (freeze) doesn't happen if I disable Google Desktop.  My office mate has the same issue so we eliminated common gadgets and the issue persisted.  Let me know if you want me to generate another dump for you.  Let me know either way so I'll know when I can uninstall silverlight again pending a fix.

So, if I understand it correctly, removing Google Desktop resolved the issue on your machine, but the issue still persists on your office mate's machine, even though s/he removed, presumably, Google Desktop as well.  Please correct me if I'm wrong.

Could you please generate and send a dump from your office mate's machine?  You can use the same upload method as before.

Thank you, again, for your assistance!

Jonathan,

To clarify, disabling Google Desktop does fix the issue on my computer and my office mate's computer.  We tested by going back and forth between the microsoft home page and msdn home page.  With GD started the CPU pegs out when leaving a page with Silverlight.

So what happens now?  Are you going to try to reproduce the issue on your side?

Thanks again, Chad.

Yep, that's the plan.  At a minimum, it gives the product group a starting point to find the root cause of the conflict.

Because Silverlight 1.0 updates are pushed out automatically, I may not know exactly when a fix for this issue goes live.  If I do find out, though, I'll let everyone here know.
