Silverlight installation error 1500

As others have mentioned here, I too am receiving the message "Microsoft Silverlight could not be installed on your computer" when attempting to install either Silverlight 1.0 or Silverlight 1.1 Alpha.  When I click "More information" I am brought to http://www.microsoft.com/silverlight/help.aspx?errorID=1500 which tells me The Microsoft Silverlight download is invalid.  I have tried downloading over and over and over again.  All with the exact same results.  Is it possible to get a checksum for the "correct" binary?

I am not completely new to trying to use Silverlight.  I remember having this same problem several months back when I first tried installing it, but I had eventually found some way around it.  At one point I was able to view Silverlight applications in both IE7 and Firefox on my machine.  However, with the "alpha refresh" and official release status of Silverlight 1.0 I thought I would remove everything and install the latest versions.  Now I cannot view any Silverlight applications in either browser.  Just to reiterate, I've made sure to uninstall all previous Silverlight installations from my Add/Remove programs, but I still am unable to install any version of Silverlight from http://silverlight.net/Default.aspx.

Re: Silverlight installation error 1500

Hello,

Try uninstalling all instances of Silverlight 1.0 and 1.1, then restart. Upon rebooting, remove these registry keys (make sure you're running as an administrator):

HKCR, Typelib\{283C8576-0726-4DBC-9609-3F855162009A}\0.8
HKCR, Typelib\{283C8576-0726-4DBC-9609-3F855162009A}\0.8.5.0
HKLM, SOFTWARE\Classes\Typelib\{283C8576-0726-4DBC-9609-3F855162009A}\0.8
HKLM, SOFTWARE\Classes\Typelib\{283C8576-0726-4DBC-9609-3F855162009A}\0.8.5.0

Then reinstall Silverlight. This should do the trick. If not, let me know!

Re: Silverlight installation error 1500

That's not likely to help if you get error code 1500 it means the installer couldn't validate the signature of the binaries. This could be caused by a corrupted download, but it could also be caused by things like no Internet connection, incorrectly set date/time, corrupted local certificates. If you post the MD5 sum of the package you downloaded I can check whether or not your installer was corrupted.

Re: Silverlight installation error 1500

Thanks for responding.  Here are my md5's:

$ md5sum Silverlight.1.0.exe
df1982b8f2142b4fb5dd91caac11061c *Silverlight.1.0.exe
$ md5sum Silverlight.1.1.AlphaRefresh.exe
f2ab6e707d476c656026b39d3797113c *Silverlight.1.1.AlphaRefresh.exe

I've tried redownloading and recalculating and always get the same sums everytime I download.  I am always connected to the internet on this machine, I never change my date/time (it is currently 3:28 PM EDT).  What "local certificates" could be corrupted?

 Again, thanks for your help.

Re: Re: Silverlight installation error 1500

There is nothing left to uninstall.  I rebooted again, could not find any of those keys in my registry, and the installations still fail in the same way.

 Thanks!

Those md5 sums look correct to me. You can read up on certificate chains here http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/Aa376515.aspx but I'm afraid I couldn't tell you why yours is failing.

Well thanks for your help anyway.  Guess I'll just fall into the one less Silverlight user abyss.  Gee, if only I had the source code maybe I could actually figure out the problem...

Re: Silverlight installation error 1500

After an aborted load of a trial version of Silverlight 1.1 I have never been able to load silverlight.  I figured that with 2.0 that problem would go away.  Unfortunately, I am still getting the "error 1500: The Microsoft Silverlight download is invalid" message.  With all the brain power at Microsoft, I am just very confused as to why this situation has no answer.  Being a programmer, myself, I know how easy it is to look at the code and see where the exception is thrown.  Could someone who has access to the code please look and see what throws the 1500 error message?

 Thanks in advance.

Here's the third post in this thread:

Re: Silverlight installation error 1500

Daniel,

Thanks for your help on this.  The MD5 for my Silverlight download is 4E547458C4AF8982019E225DD31D9E52 *Silverlight.2.0.exe (If I downloaded a good MD5 calculator.  I used a product called "FastSum".)  Given the number of programs that I have successfully downloaded in the past, I seriously doubt that I have a corrupt file.  Something else in the system has to be kicking off the installer.  I seriously believe that there is some hidden file or some registry entry that is causing the problem.  Silverlight 1.1/2.0 are the only programs that have failed to load on a download situation.  (I have sort of ruled out a MS Installer problem since I have loaded and unloaded VS2005 Ocras Express developer editions and subsequently replaced them with VS2008 Express editions -- all downloaded from MS website -- on this machine with no problems, as well as other MS software.)

After listening to Tim Heuer's Silverlight presentation at yesterday's "Heros" conference, and noting that this is just a client-side browser add-in I thought that my installation of IE7 may be corrupt.  (I had a bad load of IE7 on the automated update that came many months ago and had to go to the IE7 website and do a reload to correct the problem.)  So, I removed IE7.  I am on IE6 right now and the same problem persists; error 1500 - corrupt file.  I even did the install directly from the download this morning and same problem still exists.

From a historical perspective, with the 1.1 "corrupt file" issue I followed someone's suggestion at removing some temp files.  I did that and it did not help.  Based on another thread, I also tried going to the temp file and running the installer directly.  Again, no help.  So this is a very persistent problem on my machine.

If I am a majority of 1 on this, I can bite the bullet and reload my machine from scratch.  But, I think my problem is indicative of what others may be experiencing, but just not frustrated enough yet to squawk about it.  Now that I have seen what Silverlight can do, I can imagine that this product will really take off with the 2.0 enhancements.  So, I do want to be ready for it.

Thanks again for any assistance you can give.

Bob

Re: Silverlight installation error 1500

Bob and Daniel,

I am having EXACTLY the same problem that Bob is going through.  Surely there is some way to resolve this other than bare metal install of the OS.  I was annoyed before but now I'm REALY annoyed because I can't get mlb.com audo stream.

Re: Silverlight installation error 1500

bobstokesbary, your MD5 sum matches the one I get so it's unlikely your download is corrupted.

I suggest trying to install Silverlight through Microsoft Update. Doing this, should make sure your certificates are up to date. Also you should check your calendar is the correct date.

This won't work either.  I've already tried installing Silverlight via Microsoft Update.  Same result.  My calendar is definitely the correct date.

Re: Silverlight installation error 1500

I don't think this works either.  Following the experience of this thread: http://silverlight.net/forums/p/1472/3575.aspx  I extracted the individual files from the .exe which yielded the following files: install.exe (152KB) install.res.dll (248KB), silverlight.msi (57kB), silverlight.msp(4,360KB), and uaclauncher.exe (68KB).  When I run either the install.exe or the uaclauncher.exe I get the 1500 error message.  When I run the silverlight.msi I get what looks like an install, but Silverlight is not installed.

As with Mark, I know I have a good internet connection at all times (or at least as good as TimeWarner gets) and my clock is up to date and is running correctly.  (As an aside, I don't think the clock is as sensitive as you may think.  My desktop was set to the wrong time zone when I updated to Silverlight on that machine.  And it continues to work now that I have changed it to the the correct time zone.)

Daniel, I am sure we will get to the bottom of this.  Thanks for your continued help on this matter.

Re: Silverlight installation error 1500

I have nothing new to add, other than that I am having what I believe is the exact same problem, took many of the same steps (MD5's OK, manually extracted, etc.), and am deeply relieved (sorry guys) that I am not the only one. If I figure something out, I'll be back.

Re: Re: Silverlight installation error 1500

Dan,

Thanks for the update.  Appreciate your consideration.

You know, could this have anything to do with .net?  A couple of months ago I had trouble with MS update complaining about a .net update and I wound up having to uninstall all the .net software, boot in a select safe mode using msconfig and re installing them all before I could get MS .net update to fly.  All this was based on KB's from MS.

 Thanks,

Mark
