whatissilverlight:What exactly is Silverlight?
As I'm not so sure whether you are a developer or normal user, I will give you both explanations as sample as I can.
For normal user, Silverlight is just like another Flash. It developed by Microsoft for .NET developers. You will get all rich and cool features (e.g. interactivity, look-cool user interface, media and etc) like you got from Flash..I think that's all for users. You may ask why you need to install since you already have Flash installed. The reason is sample. As you need to install flash to surf the flash-enabled website, you have to install silverlight to surf the silverlight-enabled website. I believe that there will be more Silverlight-enabled website on the net. If you are sport fan, make sure that you have installed Silverlight on your machine.. :)
For developer, Silverlight is more than Flash. Silverlight is cross-platform. You don't have to install .NET framework on your server if you want to run your Silverlight website. You can just upload the dlls and xaml files to your host (maybe, Linux Host). And then, it will works. It's because the Silverlight plugin that you installed on your browser will take care of rendering the Silverlight. You can write Silverlight project with managed code. You and your web designer can work very closely. You or your web designer can design the web ui in Expression Blend. And the generated XAML can be used in Silverlight project.
whatissilverlight:I can't even look at examples of what it does to determine if I want it on my system without installing it on my system.
Let's say you don't know about Flash. Do you think that you will be able to check the Flash examples and how it does without installing Flash player on your machine? The same goes for Silverlight.
whatissilverlight:Yet another reason why people hate microsoft
Silverlight is one more reason why I love Microsoft. :)
