So I've spent the last half hour searching, and I can't find the answer

What exactly is Silverlight? There is no way I'm putting another POS program on my already slow and bloated vista install without someone telling me what this is.

Anyone? That should be the first thing that is stated when you look up this program. What does it do? I can't even look at examples of what it does to determine if I want it on my system without installing it on my system.

Yet another reason why people hate microsoft.

As I'm not so sure whether you are a developer or normal user, I will give you both explanations as sample as I can.

For normal user, Silverlight is just like another Flash. It developed by Microsoft for .NET developers. You will get all rich and cool features (e.g. interactivity, look-cool user interface, media and etc) like you got from Flash..I think that's all for users. You may ask why you need to install since you already have Flash installed. The reason is sample. As you need to install flash to surf the flash-enabled website, you have to install silverlight to surf the silverlight-enabled website. I believe that there will be more Silverlight-enabled website on the net. If you are sport fan, make sure that you have installed Silverlight on your machine.. :)

For developer, Silverlight is more than Flash. Silverlight is cross-platform. You don't have to install .NET framework on your server if you want to run your Silverlight website. You can just upload the dlls and xaml files to your host (maybe, Linux Host). And then, it will works. It's because the Silverlight plugin that you installed on your browser will take care of rendering the Silverlight. You can write Silverlight project with managed code. You and your web designer can work very closely. You or your web designer can design the web ui in Expression Blend. And the generated XAML can be used in Silverlight project.

Let's say you don't know about Flash. Do you think that you will be able to check the Flash examples and how it does without installing Flash player on your machine? The same goes for Silverlight.

Silverlight is one more reason why I love Microsoft. :)

Would it have been that hard for Microsoft to say "silverlight is just like flash, but better"

Sorry that you will work so hard on making silverlight enabled web sites, but I won't be looking at them. After being forced to use Vista and MS office 2007 at work, I really don't want to deal with Microsoft products anymore. After turning off all the "cool features" my vista enable laptop burns through a battery in less than 2 hours. my co-workers laptop running XP takes 2.5 and when he's on Linux, it's almost 3.

The last thing I need is another piece of Microsoft software cluttering up my system.

Good luck

LOL I dont blame you but then in a year to two I don't know how you are going to have a web life without silverlight, you'll have to donwload it some point sooner or later and I just hope in your case its later, but I rather you make it sooner to enjoy the goodies of Silverlight

:) Yes. but sooner or later, you will be forced to install Silverlight by your desire that you want to watch something from Silverligth-enabled website. At the earlier ages of my web life, I didn't like Flash at all. but I wanted to watch Flash movies or etc so I was forced to install flash player .. now, I'm pretty okay with flash plugin and I don't mind to install..

For silverlight, yes, i will work so hard on making Silverlight-enabled websites even you said that you won't be looking at them. but I know you will install silverlight on one day if you are working on windows... :)

I think that it might be because of your laptop configuration. I also have Vista installed on my laptop. I can use it for 4 hours. If you want some recommendations for laptop, I suggest you to try VAIO laptop.. it's pretty good.

Thank you, buddy. :) I hope you will enjoy surfing Silverlight-enabled website soon. :)
